Hello, m'dears. Soojy here.
I would have posted sooner, but laptop time only happens lately when baby boy isn't in my arms, and well... :D

Here is an official benediction to get excited and make stuff, as has been requested.

I am already so proud of you, and feeling so affirmed.

From my heart to yours,
from tasty brain to tasty brain,
if there are lyrics* and bits of my work
which light a fire in, or for, your maker-self,
know you have my blessing
to do the derivative, inspired thing.**

There is no sweeter exchange
than art which inspires art.
There is no more lovely synergy
that what this cauldron
is here to hold.

*if ever you need a clarification on what the actual words are in lyrics I have written, please do ask.

**and you are in no way required to donate things you make as potential tip rewards. Invited, yes, but not required.

Sorry I lapsed on updating this post for a while.  Gonna do better.
Baby Jesse did just fine at his grandparents' house overnight while I did my first evening show of the year at the beginning of this week!  So I will be able to sprinkle in some more regular evening shows now, in addition to some afternoon shows.  Still no plans to travel out of state before April, so it's all gonna be live from home-ish until then!  Whee!  And thank you all for staying involved!  We had good-sized crowds for both February streams, and some new viewers as well!

1. Crow Moon Tunes Online Concert!

Monday, March 9 8pm CST

Also known as the Worm Moon, the Sap Moon, and the March full moon. :)

2. Sunday Matinee online show!

Sunday, March 29 2pm CST

Lots to celebrate for this one: my first record's release anniversary, my Mom's birthday, slightly belated spring equinox, early April Fool's Day, and my first show away from home for the year a few days after!

Watch here.

Hello all,

I've been working on a series of paintings based on the 12 (+1 extra!) signs of the zodiac. I've partnered with an herbalist friend of mine who has made herbal elixirs to coincide with the signs - using the artwork as labeling.

We had been planning an old fashioned wine and cheese art show - with 13 Altars set up with crystals, herbs and other artifacts along with the elixirs and artwork. Well... haha... covid. We've managed to organize a safe staggered approach to have very small batches of people come through the gallery space.

But, we thought it would make sense to use all this online technology to do a livestream of the show! I'd love to see some of you there if you can make it. To register for the event is 100% free, you just need to have a zoom account:

The show is THIS Saturday, November 21st 8- 9pm EST. Click this link to register

 Right.  How are you, gang?  Good lord what a timeline we're in.

Anything you need, any fundraisers going on, any time you just need a safe cauldron, I hope you'll share here.  I hope you'll post here.  You're all in my heart and on my mind.

March 29 stream is going on as scheduled this Sunday, and I know you'll be there if you can.  New artists are joining Online Concert Thin. A songwriter-trumpeter will be going on March 27 in the evening, AND another new performer will go live right after my Sunday show concludes!  Please go and see them too if you're able.

I'm sorry I forgot to update AGAIN about the sudden March 21 stream.  We blew previous concert attendance out of the water, had about twice the biggest audience we'd had to date.  Thank you.

Stay safe, loves.  All is well here with me and mine right now.  Tomorrow's my mama's 70th birthday, and we have to celebrate from a distance.  Hurts my heart, but at least she is safe and well thus far.

 Sorry I didn't give more advance notice, y'all.  All the things.  But I am very very joyful about this evening.

Leslie and I will start at 5pm Central.  Watch here.

Folks I trust utterly are running the new platform, Online Concert Thing. :D Test broadcasts and code fiddling have gone well.

That said, if it does all go wonky at any point, I will also be attempting to stream via my YouTube channel and FB live.  So we have those as backup, if needs must.

I was on the way home from the booksale yesterday, and getting caught up on Filkcast [a wonderful filk podcast, that comes out every 2 weeks]. During this episode [http://filkcast.blogspot.com/2019/07/filkcast-episode-19-july-17-2019.html ], they played a delightful song called "The Last Page."

It's on Sunnie Larsen's new album [https://sunnielarsen.bandcamp.com/track/the-last-page ], so I assumed she wrote it. But, upon looking it up, I find it was written by [personal profile] yam.

It wonderfully encapsulates that feeling of meeting "your" characters for the first time.

And, the music's ridiculously gorgeous, so everyone wins!

 As always I'm really looking forward to tonights online show. I know Sooj is a clever pixie and I'm sure she'll have a new online platform where us weirdos can gather.

I've only been lurking around since earlier this year, but I look forward to these SO much - I'm a work at home mamma, so things get isolating. Especially when it comes to art and creativity. The other folk that enjoy sooj's music seem genuinely awesome and likewise creative and pagan/mythic leaning. These shows feel less like the typical passive online distraction and more like an actual 'IRL' exchange of energy, ideas and time.

It'll only get better. But I'll miss everyone trying to send good juju for Concert Window's connection to stop sucking.

I'll be there with bells on tonight, hope to see other cauldronites there too!

~Ahoy brothers and sisters of the cauldron! It is I, Chris Kobold; bard of note!~

I hope this day finds you happy as can be. If not, I hope tomorrow finds you even better! Before I dive into my ramblings, I want to let you know that your happiness is worth every possible step you can take towards it. Your vision of a perfect life is achievable, and I so ardently believe in you. You've got this!

~~~~~
I've been hard at work ironing out some technical stuff with my chosen instruments (guitar and bodhran, mostly) before I decide I'm comfortable enough to record some things I've been meaning to record. It's been a crazy slow process trying to nail the technique of just not missing my drum while playing. This has hurt the confidence I have in my overall sound, so I feel it's important to put my thoughts on the matter out there in case any of my kindred creative souls have the same issue!
Anxiety, right? It sucks for all of us when it rears its ugly head. It's gotta suck especially for those of us who self-teach due to a lack of resources. After all, we don't have the comparison to draw with a teacher or peers while we hopefully learn the right things in the right order. We envy the folk on the internet or in the city square who make it look so easy. Well, I certainly do, at least! I want to be as good as they are—to create beautiful things like they do without the immense struggle I have to go through. Heck, I can barely strum and sing at the same time as it is!
Sure it takes time, but I have terrible patience! Lots of online resources seem to think that there are shortcuts to technique, but there are dreadfully few that I've found. Muscle memory is a hard thing to force—nigh impossible, I think. I just have to be better than I am now, all the time.
I think this train of thought has a lot to do with judging myself harshly. True, there's always room to improve as an artist, but I'm doing myself a serious disservice if I put my ideas on hold for when I feel as though I'm adequate enough to do them justice. If I'm not good enough for my ideas, then how will I ever be good enough? The answer, as I'm sure you can agree with, is that I need to just make the thing.
~~~~~

That's all for now, my dear fellow creatives of the Cauldron. What are your thoughts on technique anxiety and such? I'd love to hear!

Until next time, keep your chins high and your heads in the clouds! You are shiny! :D

With warmest regards (and magic too),
~Chris Kobold

Hey beautiful people! Shira here, this is my first time posting in the Cauldron and I'm honored to be here.

Months ago, I roped in my boyfriend-at-the-time to work with me on a song in Sooj's honor. It's inspired by one of my all time favorites, Tricker Prayer, and of course, by the Trickster himself. I wrote the lyrics and performed the vocals, and Alex wrote, played, and produced the instrumentation.

We call it "In The Know." I sent it to Sooj the other day —She encouraged me to share it with others, so I thought you guys might appreciate it.

Without further ado, In The Know.

Two things, actually, but first thing first: used the last nine of 'em! On a related note, I now have quite a tan from being outside for so long doing them today. Middle one is mine to keep, because YUP. (Top row: 1157, Neptune, No Fire Like Mine; middle: 1157, Ask Me Anything, Sorrow's Song; bottom: Show Me, Show Me, Witchka. All except for Ask Me Anything, Sorrow's Song, and Witchka were specific requests I caught in the midst of the chat these past few concerts! Witchka was because I got bored and the spelling bee was too cute.)

Set of nine woodburned coasters.

Secondly, GUITAR!!!!!!! AND THANKS TO EVERYBODY!!!!! My preferred strings arrive Monday, so I'll probably be breaking it in, oh, Tuesday morning? With a recording of a certain song, now that my hands don't hurt as much. Hehehehe.

Some of you in the cauldron may have seen the painting I’ve done on Legend Lure’s bodhran on social media. I’m really proud of this piece and collaboration, and I don't say that about my work often. You can see it here if you haven’t!

The design is based on the tinner’s rabbits; a dancing triple hare motif surrounded by a simple celtic knot. The bunny inspiration came from Sooj’s Rabbit’s Song.

I showed the finished drum to some friends tonight who are both musicians and artists.

“Why all that [work, effort on the art] for something thats just going to be worn off by getting beat on?”

For just a second, I kinda stood there and stared at them. Drum hanging limp at my side, like a deflated balloon. I made some flippant remark and brushed it off and started talking about something else.

That comment has stuck in my craw this evening. (It also may be the wine) Its not that they were disparaging against my craftsmanship, the image itself. But against even making it in the first place.

Why all that work? Because I’m an artist dammit. It’s what I DO. I definitely hope that the image lasts through many playings. But I know it wont last forever, because nothing in this life does. Everything gets worn down and faded with time. I’ve spent a stupid amount of time, money and pain getting tattoos. I can already see the signs of age and weathering. These art pieces are on borrowed time because so is their canvas.

The only way to truly insure the life of the image, would be to never play the bodhran. Which goes against the nature of an instrument. The artist to not create because her images wont last forever (or get internet famous, or make tons of money), goes against the nature of the artist.

I’m rambling. Time is coming for us all, and the wheel keeps turning. Create your work, share it, set it free, unleash it with no desperate attachment.

Anyone else run into this crap? Am I crazy?

Thing one: I believe I am not telling tales out of school when I let y'all know that our own Ari is within $55 of having enough money for the guitar of their dreams and is accepting donations toward it!   Go go go!  UPDATE: GUITAR ACHIEVED!

Thing two: have y'all seen my song sis Leslie's Kickstarter yet?  Her new record will be called Keep Left at the Fork.  It's a journey into Faerie.  It's amazing new songs, one of which I got to play guitar for.  The KS campaign is called a "Faerie album and fine arts nexus" because she is doing with lots of makers what we are doing with tip rewards: bringing new shiny things into the world in collaboration!  Aagh, so good, and she's just past halfway to her goal with about 18 days left to raise the rest at all-or-nothing.  Go read, boost, back if you can!

Thing three: you are interacting with a very excited song witch right now because I just wrote a killer new song for Lammas/Lughnasadh, which means I will have that to debut during the July 16 broadcast!  BUT BECAUSE I LOVE YOU AND I AM ABOUT TO BURST, here are the lyrics (updated July 9):

Lammas (Gather Round)
c. S. J. Tucker 2019; all rights reserved.

Gather round for the blessing!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye witches/people,
gather round!

Gather round all at Lammas!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye corbies,
gather round!

Cut the corn, hold the harvest,
bless the bread, bless the grain.
Seize John Barleycorn
and crown him king.

He shall keep us through the winter.
All that falls shall be reborn.
For the Bride of the Meadow
shall we sing.

"Shall ye sing and wear the garland,
wear the Meadowsweet;
shall ye rise to reap the barley,
rise to cut the sheaf.

I bring blessing on your Lammas
as you crown your fallen king
then call the crows to claim him
and hold me as I grieve.
Rejoice and dance and grieve!"

Gather round for the blessing!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye dancers/seekers,
gather round!

Gather round at Lammas!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye corbies,
gather round!

All the prizes of the harvest,
gold and orange, brown and green,
flash their colors 'neath the sun
and 'neath the scythe.

Lady dolly on the altar,
crone or maiden, first and last;
cut the barley, cut the wheat
and make her fine.

"Make me fine with cloth & ribbons
e'er you lay me on the fire.
I'm the blessing of your supper,
of the oats and of the rye.

"Blessings on your Lammas
as you crown your fallen king
then call the crows to claim him
and hold me as I grieve.
Rejoice and dance and grieve!"

Gather round for the blessing!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye people/witches,
gather round!

Gather round all at Lammas!
Gather round, gather round!
Gather round, all ye corbies,
gather round!

I managed to get a messy studio demo together before my weekly deadline for my songwriter group, but it needs much smoothing.  My cycle was about to come on and so my voice was more slippery than I like it to be on recording days.  My goal is to level up that demo by next Tuesday so it can be a tip reward + hand-lettered commemorative lyric sheet!

Heeheehee.

So. Had planned to record with guitar today, but between being sick & allergy-prone all week and my left hand putting up a fuss (yay random joint problems), I couldn't actually sing or play it yet. BUT. Here are the lyrics, with a giant thanks to Sooj for letting me play in the sandbox.

IN THE HIVE OF MAMA BADGER

Come for the sweet, stay for the buzz
She's a quiet queen so there's no fuss
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Yes, her house becomes a home for
All the bees who love to roam
It's the Hive of Mama Badger
Bringin' home a bumblebee, well
She's got frames far as the eye can see
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Stick around and soon you'll score
Honey in a giant jar
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Remember, thou art bee. Now make your honey.

What do you think the bugs call home,
The wasps' nest or the honeycomb?
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Sun can burn and oven beep but
Who cares when the honey's sweet?
In the Hive of Mama Badger
When it comes your turn to show up late
She's on your side with the time zone hate
In the Hive of Mama Badger
When it comes your turn to miss a song
She's on your side if sh*t goes wrong
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Remember, thou art bee. Now make your honey.
Remember, thou art keeper, yes.

Badger jokes I think are fun,
But Narnia's the only one
In the Hive of Mama Badger
Badger knows there's a concert tonight so she'll
Be in the chat in case things don't go right
But this is Concert Window. Who knows, things just might!
So all the bees who love to roam
Have surely found a perfect home
She will take it all in stride
Don't believe a word she says
If she insists her good ideas will end --
Just keep in mind her crafts are beautiful!

Remember, thou art bee!
Remember, thou art keeper!
Remember when you step outside and friends all swarm around your head
They give a gift of honey;
no one who eats it will frown for very long
or ever be the same.

Good day, treasured friends! Chris Kobold: Bard Extraordinaire here!

It's been way too long since I posted to the Cauldron, and for that I apologize. Things in my life have been going crazy-fast as of late, and I've gotten out of touch with the things I find cathartic. I might be getting a new apartment soon, though, so yay! :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Funny, isn't it, how life can sometimes skip along like no time has gone by at all? I've always thought that was kind of scary, like I'm not seizing every opportunity to do something memorable or to create something that I'm proud of. In a way, I'm actually terrified of that, though I know I shouldn't be if I want to live comfortably with myself. After all, not everyone can produce amazing art constantly.
It's hard to overcome perfectionism and even harder to love yourself despite not being the consistent energetic force you want to be. I often lack the energy to make the things I want to make after I spend it all just living life responsibly. I haven't uploaded to YouTube nearly as often as I wanted to when I set out to post videos in the first place, and it really ate at me when I would think about that. It still does sometimes.
"Am I not as good as other musicians who have more drive than I do?"
"How do they do it?"
"Should I just give up?"
"I'm obviously not cut out for this."
"Just go back to college so you can have a real job, idiot."
"I'm a failure, and I always will be."
... Our brains can be cruel to us in really tragic ways. I'm okay—promise. I just feel it's important to share that I think things like this too, in case you find that you do.
Much like "real" work, we need breaks from our passions too. There's no shame in that. It's important to come back to your passions after you feel better, but be gentle to yourself. Be kind. Think of a public statement that one of your favorite artists might make, telling that they'll have to be away for a while but will be back. You'd most likely want them to know that you'll still be there to support them when they step back up to plate, right?
Why wouldn't you afford yourself the same kindness?
As artists, we might attach too much value to consistency. I think that in days of yore, the comings and goings of the "muse" were much more respected than they are today. However, I also think that I'm the biggest critic of my muse's timing. I really beat myself up for not being "on time," whatever that is.
I have a motto that helps me in times like this: "Life's a journey, not a race."
Your journey can be made more beautiful when you take time to stop and camp for the night. Tell your stories, sing your songs, and extend your love to those around you. H*ck, come the next day you can even do some hiking off the beaten path. Every trail is worth it, because it's the trail you took.
That's all for now, brothers and sisters of the Cauldron! I can only hope this resonates with at least one or two folks out there. You are wonderful, and I am grateful for you.
-Chris Kobold: Wonder Bard
TL;DR: Let your muse come and go, and work towards being comfortable with existing even when you aren't producing the content that you want to make.
badger and Melissa have me up to my ears in gorgeous bookmarks, and badger and Michelle's necklaces are classing up the place right alongside them.  We're home safe from the mini-tour, and father-in-law has begun getting the swimming pool ready for us all.  Sweet Memorial Day to each of you.
I ordered a new magnet to add to tip rewards in honor of all the spring and summer lushness around here, of one of my luna moth photos!  What do you all think, should I bundle some of the new things together, or keep the magnets + thank you notes thing going, pendants separate as with Michelle's lyric pendants that I already had going?
I don't know how much of the flooding news you've all seen about the rivers down near me, but we are fine so far.  Father-in-law thinks we may be cut off for a few days, but we won't be underwater even then.
For July: when would you all prefer a July Concert Window show to be?  Let me know.
This book is the first in the Dreamhealers duology, and was my introduction to Hogarth's work. The world-building's excellent, and it's one of the kindest, most fun books I've ever read [and reread many times].
There'll never be a better time to check it out.
